NHS culture prevents Doctors from ‘whistle blowing’
A recent report from the British Medical Association (BMA) in Scotland has shown that 40% of Doctors do not report issues of concern. It is thought that this is due to the NHS culture leading to fear of the implications and potential negative impact on career development.
Whistle blowing policies are in place and are aimed at encouraging staff to report any concerns they may have, yet one in ten doctors are reported to have felt uncomfortable with the potential consequences of speaking out. 44% of staff concerns were relating to standards of care, with 37% focusing on the behaviour of fellow staff, all areas that could potentially require additional attention. The NHS has faced criticism that Board members and Ministers should be bolder in encouraging feedback to assist with identifying areas for future improvement.
